iMac Price DropAs of this morning, Apple slashed the price of its 20-inch 2.1GHz PowerPC-based iMac.  Pricing for the G5 based iMac dropped $199 from $1699 to $1499.  Pricing remains the same on the 17” iMac model.  If you really want to grab a bargain basement price on either of these machines, head over to Amazon where you can pick up the 20” G5 iMac for $1349.99 or the 17” model for $1174.99.  Although the new Intel based iMacs are smokin’ hot machines, the G5 based models are still more than adequate for most average users needs.  Don’t miss out on this great deal!

Best Buy Rebates If you are an electronics collector like we are, you know how expensive this hobby can be.  Every payday you look at your wallet or purse and wonder what you can afford.  So what do you do when you get to the store?  Look for the specials, see what’s on sale, and sometimes you come across the rebate sale.  You sit there and wonder whether or not your willing to shell out the 30-40 dollars that you’ll eventually get back in 6-8 weeks.  Is it worth it?  Apparently not to Best Buy.

Rebates offered by the manufacturers are being done away with at the big box retailer in lieu of instant savings.  There will be less reading of the fine print on prices.  This is all due to “strong vendor partnerships.”  Translation: Best Buy is getting good prices for their merchandise and can afford to let them slide for cheaper every once in a while.

DescriptionOccasionally, “One Day, One Deal” site Woot goes all out for a few days in what they’ve glamorously termed a “Woot Off.” (Embrace wholly the vague, sexual undertones.) Their products range from brand name coffee machines to other brand name 52” televisions to MP3 players and other oddities, but they’re almost always gadget-minded. (Or at least, delightfully quirky, along with their product descriptions.) During their Woot Off, Woot cycles through a single item at a time. As each item sells out, they move on to the next item. Everything they sell is shipped (and handled) for just $5.00, and when you go ahead and check your favorite shop-and-compare site, you’ll find Woot’s usually got quite the deal going on. Take a few looks over the next couple of days and buy yourself an early Christmas present. If you don’t like what you see now, try again in another hour or so—things move quickly!

Mac Mini Test Drive DeadLess than one day after offering a Mac Mini test drive, it seems Apple has suddenly pulled the plug on the offer.  While no explanation has been given as of yet, Apple affiliates have received an e-mail from LinkShare stating:

As a follow-up to an email we sent you this morning, please note that the Mac mini Test Drive promotion is no longer offered at the Apple Store. We have dynamically updated the banners and landing pages for this promotion, so if you are featuring this promotion on your site, they will automatically update to another promotion. Please be sure to update your Mac mini Test Drive text links. The rest of the promotions featured in today’s email are still live.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Thank you,
Apple Store Affiliate Program

While it may not have been a big deal for most, seeing as how it was more of an extended return policy mascarading than a great deal, it’s still quite odd to see it pulled barely a day after going live with it.

Mac mini Test Drive

Apple seems to be swinging for the fences with this one. They are offering anyone who is interested an extended trial of the Mac mini. One can only assume that they either want to move some stagnant product, or that this is a move to get a large amount of Mac computers into the hands of those who use Windows but are curious. Now, what is really going on here is that Apple is just extending the return period for the mini, as any Apple product can be returned within 14 days for a full refund. Nonetheless, here is how it works according to Apple:

  1. Purchase a new Mac mini from the Apple Store online. You can also get an Apple keyboard and mouse, such as our new Mighty Mouse.
  2. Set it up and start enjoying it.
  3. If you don’t love it, call us within 30 days of your order and we’ll arrange for you to return your system — including the Apple keyboard and mouse — for a full refund.

If you are interested, you have until Halloween 2005 to make your purchase, and it must be done online.
